COMPANIES TEAM TO END DINNER DISTRACTION
As the annoyance from unwanted phone solicitations raises anger
among consumers and policymakers, two companies cut a deal last
week intended to exploit the current mood.
VeriSign Inc., a networking products firm, and Call Compliance Inc.
cut a deal to streamline the ability of individual consumers to
inform telemarketers they don't want to get any calls.
The deal marries Call Compliance's call-blocking software to VeriSign's
network technology so that telemarketers can get easy access to
do-not-call lists.
The federal government and many states have laws forbidding telemarketers
from calling people who put themselves on do-not-call lists, and
firms that violate those laws can be subject to fines if faced with
determined enforcement.
The service is expected to be offered to telecom carriers for sale
by the end of the year.
